THINGS TO DO

Steeped in history and culture and with breathtaking walks in and around the town, Petworth has a wealth of things to see and do

The ancient market town of Petworth traces its origins back to medieval times. Set amidst the lush beauty of the West Sussex countryside in an area known as the Golden Triangle, its winding lanes and quaint old buildings give the impression that time has stood still. Yet nothing could be further from the truth, for Petworth, whilst maintaining all the charm of the past, is a thriving town.

Not only an important centre for antiques, it also has much more to offer the visitor, including interesting shops, cafes and restaurants. Other attractions and events in Petworth include the charming Cottage Museum, the cultural highlight of the annual Petworth Festival, the traditional Petworth Fete, the Petworth Food and Wine Festival and the Hidden Gardens weekend- the list is endless.

Within the Petworth area is the famous National Trust Petworth House, open to the public every day. Petworth House is home to a wonderful collection of paintings including local scenes by JMW Turner, who worked and stayed here, and the extensive Petworth Park laid out by Capability Brown in the 18th century with its herds of roaming deer around the lakes.

There is also much to enjoy in the surrounding area too, including the grandeur of Arundel Castle, Nelson’s ‘Victory’ in Portsmouth Historic Dockyards, the delightful Elizabethan mansion and gardens at Parham House & Gardens and Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, to name but a few.

Go horse or motor racing at Goodwood, or have a relaxing game of golf at Cowdray Park or time your visit with the annual summer Petworth Festival of music and dance and we can guarantee what ever you chose you will not be disappointed with your visit.

One of the joys of this corner of West Sussex, is the relaxed atmosphere, induced by the rolling countryside and open park scapes, which surround the town. With so much accessible land, affording a variety of views and topography around every corner there are an abundance of great walks and tours worth taking around Petworth.
